Fuel Cell fueled by Sewer Gas or Landfill Gas

City of Portland
In
July 1999, the City's Bureau of Environmental Services unveiled a methane-powered fuel cell at the

Columbia Boulevard Wastewater Treatment Plant. The 200-kW fuel cell is one of only a handful of fuel cells in the U.S.

that operates on a renewable fuel. It produces about 1.4 million kilowatt-hours a year. That's enough energy to power

nearly 120 homes - and save the City about $58,000 a year.

While most fuel cells use natural gas, this fuel cell converts methane gas, a natural by-product of the sewage treatment process,

into clean, renewable electricity that will help provide uninterrupted power to one of the treatment plant's buildings. The unit

operates like a battery, but never needs recharging.

The City of Portland added another renewable energy power project to its portfolio this spring. Now there are four microturbines

at the Columbia Boulevard Wastewater Treatment Plant next to the fuel cell.  Like the fuel cell, the microturbines turn the waste methane

generated during sewage treatment into green power and heat that can be used on site.

Germany & U.S.

The HotModule a molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) has proven itself as a technology with the potential to play an important role

in tomorrows heat and power supply. The positive evidence are several 250 KW demonstration plants in Germany and one in Spain.

Further research and deployment has to be done in order to pave its way towards a marketable product.

MTU's vision becomes reality with highly efficient and CO2-neutral production of electricity and process heat. Based on an intial

fifteen test units, ten are still running, and customers remain very satisfied about the high reliability (electrical efficiency 47%,

total efficiency over 90%). The MCFC digests all types of carbonate-containing gases, such as biogas, sewer gas, landfill gas and

cold mine gas, enabling MTU to establish a CO2-neutral decentralized energy supply.
