Health Effects of Global Warming

How Climate Change Is Making Some Place s Too Hot to Live

As Earth s climate warms, incidences of extreme heat and humidity are rising, with significant consequences for human health. Climate scientists are tracking a key measure of heat stress that can warn us of harmful conditions.

Heat stress is a leading cause of weather-related deaths in the United States each year. A recent example is the record-breaking heat wave that hit the U.S. Pacific Northwest last summer, killing hundreds. The highest wet-bulb temperature that humans can survive when exposed to the elements for at least six hours is about 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Wet-bulb temperatures are on the rise around the world, and Earth s climate has begun to exceed this limit.

Rising temperatures and sea level rise and growing zone changes are causing mass migrations all over the world.

NOAA underscored the need to dramatically cut planet-warming pollution

IV. Effects of Climate Change and Damage Costs Increasing Exponentially

Jan 2023: Accord ing to The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), 18 extreme weather disasters – which each caused at least $1 billion in damage – and caused $165 billion in damage in the US in 2022 alone. These events included 1 drought event, 1 flooding event, 11 severe storm events, 3 tropical cyclone events, 1 wildfire event, and 1 winter storm event. Overall, these events had significant economic effects on the areas impacted. Damages worldwide were in the trillions, Crop losses alone from chronic dro ught were in the trillions.

A Rapid Green Energy Transition would S ave $12 Trillion and Avoid Catastrophic Tipping Points

A new study by the WMO finds that Climate disruption is already causing devastation worldwide. Pakistan is deluged in water, Puerto Rica again devastated by another big hurricane, Europe has sweltered under punishing heat waves, China, and the U.S. are afflicted with chronic droughts and parts of Africa face famine. Damage estimates are over $100 billion for some events

V III . MELTING ICE CAPS

NASA has estimated that the   polar ice caps   are   melting   9% every ten years, which is an extremely alarming rate. If the temperature on earth continues to rise at its current rate the Arctic will have no   ice   by 2040. The Arctic   ice cap   has decreased since the 1960s by as much as 40%.
