The FDA missed its own deadline this week to ban electric shock
devices used to punish self-injurious or aggressive behavior in disabled adults
and children, including those with autism. The controversial practice,
condemned by the United Nations as a form of torture, is now used by only the
Judge Rotenberg Educational Center. The center, based in Massachusetts,
operates 50 residences.
Can Vaccines Cause Autism? Existing
Studies Weren’t Designed to Answer That Question
Existing epidemiological studies, studies on how often diseases
occur in different groups of people and why, are designed to examine whether
vaccines cause neurodevelopmental injuries in the general childhood population.
But these studies can’t capture the effects of vaccines on subgroups, like
children with mitochondrial dysfunction who may be more vulnerable to injuries
from vaccines, according to a preprint by Children’s Health Defense scientists
and their colleagues (but other studies have shown vaccinees can cause autism)
Robust clinical evidence
documents mitochondrial dysfunction in ~5% of children with ASD meeting formal
diagnostic criteria for mitochondrial disease, with an additional ~30%
demonstrating subclinical mitochondrial abnormalities (Rossignol & Frye, 2012)
.
Current large-scale
epidemiologic designs answer Question 1 and are structurally incapable of
answering Questions 2–4 as presently implemented. Translating “no detected
population-average association” into “vaccines do not cause autism” is a
category error and an instance of epistemic overreach (Pearl & MacKenzie,
2018).
current methods cannot rule out
mechanism-mediated harms in biologically vulnerable subgroups, and that the
system that produces that gap — population-average epidemiology, peer review,
legal architecture, and communication norms — is the unit of analysis. The
manuscript is intended to provide a functional nexus capable of de-polarizing
the controversy by showing precisely what the current system can, and cannot,
know under existing methods, and how it could be made to know more.

Study
analyzed 6.1 million U.S.
pregnancies and found that prenatal exposure to sterol biosynthesis–inhibiting
medications
(SBIMs)
was associated with a 1.47-fold increased risk of
autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Risk rose with polypharmacy, reaching
2.33-fold
with four or more drugs
. These medications, ranging from antidepressants to
statins, may disrupt cholesterol pathways critical for fetal brain
development.
